Conway Primary School

Phonics & Spelling

At Conway it is our intention that all our children learn to read quickly and confidently. As such we use the Read, Write, Inc (RWi) programme to get our children off to a flying start with their reading. RWi is a method of learning centred around teaching letter and sound correspondence. We use it to help our children with their reading and their spelling.

As part of the programme children will;

  • Learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts
  • Learn to read words using Fred Talk
  • Read lively stories featuring words they have learnt
  • Build their understanding of what they have read
  • Learn to write the letter/ letter groups which represent the 44 sounds learnt
  • Learn to write words by saying the sounds in Fred Talk
  • Learn to write simple sentences

How is my child taught?

The children are grouped according to their reading needs. This ensures that they are taught the correct sounds and given the right support to embed them before moving on. The groups are fluid and children will move groups, and RWi teacher throughout the year. They are taught by staff trained specifically to teach the programme. At Conway our children have a daily RWi lesson which last from 40-45 mins.

How do I know if my child is on track?

Assessing children’s progress and taking swift action to intervene when they are not on track is key. All children are assessed on entry in reception in order to group by needs. Children are then assessed on a daily basis by their group teacher and more formally at the end of every half term using the RWi assessments.

At the end of Year 1 all children undertake a phonics screening. This is a statutory assessment to check that children are reaching the expected standard in phonics before entering Year 2.

How can I help at home?

Your child will regularly bring home reading books linked to the sounds they are learning in school.
