Conway Primary School

Visit from Teresa Pearce

RELEASE
Issued: 10th March 2017
For Immediate Release;
TITLE: ''the children at Conway were engaged and eager to learn...''
Conway Primary School were delighted to welcome Teresa Pearce, the Member of Parliament for Erith and Thamesmead and the Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, to the school on Monday 6th March when she gave an inspiring talk on her role as an MP to the whole school assembly and took part in a Q&A with the children.
Mrs Pearce's message to the children was to never let anyone say that you can't achieve your aims and ambitions in life and that she hoped one day to see one of them become the local MP.
After meeting and talking to the children Mrs Pearce then met with the Headteacher, Yalini Carlsson-Ruban, Chair of Governors, Steve Piper, two Governors, Vanita Howells and Steve Sutherland along with School Business Manager, Keith Robertson.
Mrs Pearce was informed that over the past five years, Conway School has been on a path of reinvention, which has resulted in a dramatic increase in standards and this was highlighted in the Parliamentary Review published last Autumn. Mrs Pearce heard how, at the start of our journey, results in Mathematics, reading and writing were below national average but, five years on, the School is now in the enviable position of being well above both the National and the Borough averages.
Speaking after her visit to Conway, Mrs Pearce, whose constituency covers Belvedere, Erith, Lesnes Abbey, Northumberland Heath, Thamesmead, Abbey Wood and parts of Plumstead, said '' It was great to visit Conway Primary School and I was pleased to see first-hand the great work the teachers and support staff do at Conway''.
Mrs Pearce added "the children at Conway were engaged and eager to learn, and are a credit to their parents and carers, who I am sure will continue to push them on."
''We would like to thank Teresa for coming to visit us,'' said Chair of Governors, Steve Piper. ''We greatly appreciated her giving up her time to speak to the whole school assembly and my colleagues and I enjoyed our discussions with Teresa on the successes we've had at the school, the challenges we've faced and the challenges we will face in the future and it was extremely interesting to get her insight into education and the issues facing the sector.''
Finally, Headteacher Yalini Carlsson-Ruban said, ''it was lovely to meet Teresa and we are delighted that she enjoyed her visit and that she found it useful. We invited her, when her schedule allows, to return to have a full tour of the school, to meet the children and staff and to get a real flavour of what we are doing at the school''.
