Conway welcomes Tobi Alabi

This week Conway welcomed former professional footballer Tobi Alabi from the Heart4More Foundation into school to raise children’s awareness of cardiac related illnesses.

During a special assembly, Tobi told Key Stage 2 about his experiences as a professional footballer and how he felt when, at the age of 19, his heart stopped beating on the pitch. Tobi shared how he felt when he was told he had to give up football and have a pacemaker fitted to keep his heart working.

The children really enjoyed listening to Tobi’s inspirational story and learning about the types of food that can help to keep their hearts healthy.

The assembly was followed by a life-saving skills workshop for Year 5, where children learnt about what to do if someone collapses and were introduced to some basic CPR techniques through using “Resusci Anne” manikins.

Children even got to see first-hand what a defibrillator looks like and how it would be used.

“I really enjoyed learning CPR because now I know how to help someone if they are in trouble. The manikins were good because the lights showed if you were doing it correctly to get the blood pumping up to the brain. Meeting Tobi was cool because I want to be a footballer too when I am older so I got some tips about how to look after my heart.” – Khalil, Year 5
